9:30 a.m. Sunday Morning
All children ages 3th grade - 5th grade gather in the "Upper Room" for prayer and fellowship. At 9:35 the 3’s and 4’s go to the Pre-school wing with their teachers for their Sunday School. They will keep the same teachers throughout the year. The Kindergarten-5th graders depart to their particular workshops after prayer. Each workshop rotation lasts 6 or 7 weeks and we plan to cover seven stories or themes in a year. The teachers may change every rotation.

“Some Son!”
God’s Christmas Gift
Introduction:
The birth of Christ is the story of God giving us a gift we did not know we needed. Through this Christmas unit, the children will come to understand God’s Christmas gift better by exploring Jesus’ “Son of” titles: Son of God, Son of Man, Son of Joseph, Son of David, and Son of the World.
In all workshops, children will celebrate and renew their hope through God’s Gift of Jesus. A carpentry creation will help them relate the “human” side of Jesus as the Son of Joseph. A special story illustrates how Jesus came as the Son of Man to seek out and save the lost. In the Nature workshop, children learn how they are a part of Jesus’ family through a Son of David Faith Family Tree project. A movie will show how the hope for salvation begins at Christmas with the Son of God. A balloon game in the Party workshop will help them understand how the promise of the Son of the World begins at Christmas but is fulfilled at Easter.
A special Inviting Project is included in the computer workshop (or No-Computers Adaptation), where children will come to realize that the story of this amazing son needs to be shared with others. In class, they will make invitations and invite others to your church’s Christmas services. (Addresses need to be obtained in advance; see details on the following pages.)
As a special enhancement to the unit, children will collect memory items in their class’ Some Son Gift Box to help them remember the life connections of Jesus’ Son Titles.
Christmas Program Idea:
Lesson Highlights:
CARPENTRY WORKSHOP:
Concept: During Christmas, we celebrate and renew our hope through God’s Gift of Jesus, who was born to be the Son of God, Son of Man, Son of Joseph, Son of David, and Son of the World.
Son Focus: Son of Joseph
Activity: Experimenting with Wood and Woodworking Tools
Lesson Summary:
Children will learn that Jesus was part of an earthly family just as they are…in fact, it was a blended family! Jesus probably learned carpentry at step-father Joseph’s side. Children will learn that family skills and businesses are passed down from generation to generation as in Jesus’ time. In Joseph’s workshop they will experiment with carpenter tools and wood to make their own creation that will help them remember the “human” side of Jesus. Children can know Jesus as an empathetic friend, one who feels their pain but is stronger than their pain.
COMPUTER WORKSHOP (OR NO-COMPUTERS ADAPTATION):
Concept: During Christmas, we celebrate and renew our hope through God’s Gift of Jesus, who was born to be the Son of God, Son of Man, Son of Joseph, Son of David, and Son of the World.
Son Focus: Some Son!
Activity: Fluffy & God’s Amazing Christmas Adventure CD (or No-Computers Adaptation) and Invitation Project
Lesson Summary:
In this workshop, children will celebrate and review how Jesus is some amazing son. On computer, the children will explore the Christmas story with Fluffy the sheep and learn new story parts that were not covered in the other workshops. The children will also come to realize that Jesus – this amazing son – needs to be shared with others. The kids will decorate invitations for your church’s Christmas Eve service (or another event) to be mailed to friends, neighbors, and families of their choice.
If you do not have computers in your Sunday School, there is an alternate activity to use in place of the computer game. See the lesson for details.

Son Focus: Son of David
Activity: Faith Family Tree Project
Lesson Summary:
Just as Jesus was a part of David’s family, children who have hope in God’s gift of Jesus become children of God and part of Jesus’ family. The children will learn that this hope begins at Christmas with Jesus’ birth. After examining their own family trees, children will understand how Jesus was a part of King David’s family tree, as well as how the prophecy was fulfilled. Each child will “plant” their own Faith Family Tree and understand how they can help others be a part of Jesus’ family.
PARTY WORKSHOP:

Activity: Birthday Party
Lesson Summary:
Jesus’ birthday is the true meaning of Christmas, so why not have a birthday party? Through a lot of “fun and games,” children will learn WHY Jesus is God’s gift to the world. Children will learn that at Christmas, we receive an invitation to become part of God’s family. Through a balloon game, the children will understand how the promise of Christmas is fulfilled at Easter. And a party wouldn’t be complete without cake and presents! By opening gifts and completing a Movement Spiritual Journal activity, the children will celebrate the greatness of God’s gift to the world.

Children will learn that Jesus came to earth as the Son of Man to seek out and save the lost. They will learn what it means to be lost from God. They will see how Jonathan Toomey’s seemingly hopeless life is transformed in the story: The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. They will also realize that God can work though them to rescue others who are lost from God.
Overview of Unit
Shadow of Good Things to Come
Old Covenant to New Covenant
January 22 - February 26,2012
Introduction:
Hebrews 10:1 tells us that “The Law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming.” Children follow the shadow from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, tracking important people along the way on a Bible timeline. Through this unit children discover that even as God gave Moses, King David, and King Solomon plans for the tabernacle and temple, God had already planned for a New Covenant through God’s Son, Jesus. In the Game Workshop children learn that God gave Moses instructions for building the tabernacle, a dwelling place for God among God’s people. Children play a Furnish the Tabernacle game and Tabernacle Memory game through which the purpose of each tabernacle furnishing and how it points to the New Covenant through Jesus is described. In the Movie Workshop children unroll a scroll showing instructions God gave King David and King Solomon for building the temple. They view the grandeur of the temple through a movie and using a worksheet, compare the Old covenant and New Covenant through Jesus. In the Storytelling Workshop children learn about renewal as they follow King Josiah to the temple ruins where he rediscovers the Law. In the Mission Workshop children learn how Nehemiah, a Jew in exile in Babylon, returns to Jerusalem to rebuild the wall around the temple. Following Nehemiah’s actions of “see a need, pray, act,” children initiate a blanket making mission project called Project Nehemiah. In the Puppet Workshop children explore shadows as they watch a shadow puppet show and learn that Jesus is the Lamb of God. In the Cooking Workshop children discover through Scripture that their bodies are God’s temple in the New Covenant. They are asked the question – “If your body is God’s home, how then should you live?” Two recipes have them filling ice cream cones with vastly different ingredients creating a visual depiction of living by the Fruits of the Spirit.
Concept: The Tabernacle and Temple are only SHADOW dwelling places for God on earth; our bodies (heart, mind, soul, and body) are the REAL dwelling place of God’s Spirit.
Bible Memory Verse: The Law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming. Hebrews 10:1 (NIV)
Lesson Highlights:
COOKING WORKSHOP:
Focus: Our Body – God’s Temple
Activity: Grief Cones and Spirit Cones
Lesson Summary: Children discover through Scripture that their bodies are God’s temple in the New Covenant. They learn that God’s Spirit wants to dwell within them. Children are asked the question – “if your life is God’s home, how then should you live?” Preparing two vastly different recipes helps children visualize how a life lived by the Fruits of the Spirit pleases God while a life filled with sin and wrongdoing is not an inviting dwelling place for God’s Spirit and grieves God. Ice cream cones filled with pepper and other ingredients create a visual depiction of a life going down the wrong path. Ice cream cones filled with meringue and fruit cocktail create a visual depiction of the Holy Spirit filling the nooks and crannies of our lives uplifting us to live by the Fruits of the Spirit. Children give names to the two recipes according to what they discover
GAME WORKSHOP:
Focus: Old Covenant Law; God Gives Instructions for Building the Tabernacle
Activity: Furnish the Tabernacle Game, Tabernacle Map and Memory Game
Lesson Summary: Children learn that God gave Moses instructions for building a tabernacle, a dwelling place for God among God’s people. The instructions included directions for specific furnishings that had specific meaning. In Furnish the Tabernacle game children adorn themselves with the priest’s ephod breastplate representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The breastplate holds clues to the tabernacle furnishings that are to be found and placed in the correct place in the tabernacle. A second game of Tabernacle Memory describes the purpose of each tabernacle furnishing and how it foreshadows God’s plan for a new covenant through Jesus. By placing two purple ribbons in the form of a cross that connect key furnishings in the tabernacle, children discover God’s New Covenant plan through Jesus.
MISSION WORKSHOP:
Focus: Nehemiah Sees a Need and Rebuilds the Temple Wall
Activity: “Project Nehemiah” mission – making no sew fleece blankets
Lesson Summary: After years of exile, the temple in Jerusalem has fallen in disrepair. The wall surrounding Jerusalem is rubble. Children learn that Nehemiah, a Jew in exile, hears reports to this effect. This saddens him and he begs the king to allow him to return to his homeland. Here he discovers that the crumbled walls have left Jerusalem vulnerable to enemy attacks. Children learn that Nehemiah faithfully lived his life in God’s way. The significance in Nehemiah’s story lies in how Nehemiah responded to needs around him. Children discover that Nehemiah recognized needs around him, prayed about them, and acted. Pray and Act are core words children learn to use in this workshop. Through a mission project called Project Nehemiah, children are involved in recognizing a need, praying over it, and putting a plan into action. They make snuggly fleece blankets that have been prayed over for children in the hospital long term who are in need of God’s love and comfort. The mission focus may be customized to the focus of your church’s mission.
MOVIE WORKSHOP:
Focus: King Solomon’s Temple – God’s Instructions for a Permanent Dwelling Place
Activity: Movie, Solomon’s Temple, Movie Worksheet
Lesson Summary:
Children unroll a scroll showing God’s instructions given to King David for building a permanent dwelling place – the temple. These plans were handed down to King David’s son, King Solomon who actually built the temple. Through a movie children discover the grandness of the temple but how it still resembled the tabernacle in furnishings and purpose. A worksheet activity has children comparing the Old Covenant to the New Covenant through Jesus. Using scripture, children answer questions helping them understand how God provided a New Covenant through Jesus. They learn that they are God’s temple and a dwelling place for God’s Spirit.
PUPPET WORKSHOP:
Focus: Jesus, the Lamb of God
Activity: Shadow Puppet Show, Creating Shadow Puppets
Lesson Summary:
What’s a shadow? Children explore shadows and learn that a shadow is not the real thing but a faint and imperfect representation of the real thing. They explore the tabernacle as a shadow of God’s plan of good things to come through Jesus. Children learn that God wanted a dwelling place among God’s people. Through a shadow puppet performance, they learn how God gave instructions to Moses for building a dwelling place called a tabernacle. They discover that God designed each furnishing in the tabernacle to be a shadow of his son, Jesus. They discover that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Children create their own simple shadow puppet screen and puppets to take home.
STORYTELLING/DRAMA WORKSHOP:
Focus: Renewal; King Josiah Renews God’s Law
Activity: Dramatized Journey to the Temple with King Josiah
Lesson Summary:
Through Scripture children learn that King Josiah was the first good king in a very long time that followed and lived in God’s way. King Josiah visits the children and tells his story. He relays to children how disturbed he is that his people are worshipping idols, not the one true God and the temple has fallen in ruins. King Josiah implores children to help him restore the temple. Dressed in Bible time costumes, he leads children to a place where cobwebs and spiders envelop the temple ruins. A cleanup is needed to set the temple straight. While cleaning up, children discover a long forgotten scroll containing God’s Law. King Josiah reads the law to children and expresses deep sorrow that the law had not been followed in hundreds of years. He renews his faith and promises to renew the people of Jerusalem, bringing them back to worshipping God. Children learn that God loves God’s people so much that God won’t give up on them.
