Carmel Presbyterian Church’s (CPC) Missions and Evangelism committee recommended and the Session unanimously approved the creation of an international mission team to discern, investigate and make recommendations for future ministry opportunities in Zambia, Africa for CPC and our community. The team members are: Associate Pastor Anne Hilborn, Mike Jette, Eric deNeve and Ray McCorkle and the trip will take place this coming May 06 – 23, 2010. Our church supports missionaries in various countries; one of the missionaries is a young man from our own church family. These missionaries spread the Gospel in many different cultures around the world. We also monetarily support numerous organizations that minister to people in crisis situations. This would include Kids Alive, Charlotte Rescue, Pregnancy Resource of Center of Charlotte and Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region to name a few.
We sponsor an adult mission trip each year to Neon, Kentucky, to help upgrade a facility used for children and families who are in a crisis situation. An adult international mission trip is in the planning process. Mission trips can vary from year to year.
Missions Trip To NEON, KY - October 8 - 12, 2009
Several members just returned from another wonderful weekend in Neon, KY. Carmel adults have been working with HOMES (Housing Oriented Ministries Established for Service) for many years in the old coal-mining town of Neon. Matt and Mary have joined the Carmel adults for 3 years now as a couple on this trip. We truly have a passion for the people of that community and believe that the work we do through HOMES has a life-changing impact on the people we serve. Youth and young adult groups travel year-round to Neon to work with HOMES. The work that we do, weather it be building a handicap ramp or cleaning out a rental home, is rewarding and humbling. We are reminded to be thankful for our many blessings and to have hope when we are lacking. This year, God provided life-giving rain to the “holler” and sent the most amazing rainbow to remind us that He is present even in the most desperate of times.
The time spent with people on this trip is priceless. Billy and her neighbor James create a feast in their 5-foot brick oven. Harrison shows us the Christmas gifts he has hand-carved for his children and grandchildren out of scrap pieces of wood. Mike Johnson serves up the best homemade milkshakes and funnel cake fries. I hope all of you will consider joining us next year in the “Holler.” Mark 10:43 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
We have four major evangelism outreaches each year.
- In the spring we invite the community to participate in our Easter Eggstravaganza. This includes an Easter Egg Hunt and a Walk Thru Easter on the grounds of the church.
- In early summer, our Vacation Bible School that draws kids from all around our community. Our fellowship hall and class rooms are transformed into a fun and vibrant setting to make learning fun and exciting.
- In the fall we reach out to the community with Trunk or Treat which is a safe alternative to Trick or Treat. Church members decorate their car trunks; bring candy and dress up for the community.
- In the winter we share the Christmas story by creating live scenes that wind through our two parking lots. This Drive Thru Christmas allows visitors to stay warm in their cars as they see and hear the Christmas Story. We endeavor as a church to reach out as servants using our financial resources and time to serve our local community and the world at large.
