     High School Youth Group 2011-2012

The Youth program at Carmel Presbyterian Church is designed to give the youth of our church and community a safe place to have fun, hang out, learn, and grow. We have a variety of opportunities to meet these needs, including Sunday night youth group, Sunday morning Sunday school, and Wednesday night Bible study.

Our Middle school group serves youth in 6th-8th grade. We meet from 05:00 p.m. - 06:00 pm. .on Sunday evenings. Youth group includes games, fellowship, worship, and a lesson. At 06:00 p.m.we offer dinner for those who want to stay. There is a small charge of $3 per person. These meals are prepared by volunteers from the church family, often parents of the youth.

Our High school group serves youth in 9th-12th grade. We meet on Sunday evenings from 06:30 p.m. - 07:30 p.m. Again anyone who wants can eat dinner at 6pm for $3 per person. Our meeting includes games, fellowship, worship, and a lesson. A syllabus of topics for the semester, and a schedule of all events is available from Dan for both Middle and High School Sunday Evening Youth.

We offer Middle and High school Sunday school classes on Sunday mornings from 09:30 a.m. -10:15 a.m., as well as a Confirmation Class for 9th grade students interested in formally joining the church. Our Wednesday evening Bible Study is for all youth, and gives them an opportunity to learn from scripture and each other and how to apply its teaching in their everyday lives. This fall, the youth will engage in IgniTe discussions on Wednesday nights.

We also have special events that allow youth a chance both to serve and have a good time. A schedule of these events is available from the church website in the "Calendar" section. Please select the interest group "Youth" for a listing of only the Youth activities and events. For further information, please contact our Youth Director Dan Moore

rAiSiNg AdULTz ... in an age of entitlement This new-er "small group" will meet every two months at the Zidaroff's home in 20 12, with weekly YouTube clips produced in between. If you missed the January Kick-off dinner, be sure to share with Dan Moore (director of Youth and College-Age Ministries) issues you'd love for him to address on YouTube. We're aware that you are trying to raise a Christian adult (while sometimes trying to remain one)! Email Dan with Q's or to be added to his distribution list at dmoore@carmelpresbyterian.org.

Up Coming Fall 2011 Events

November 4th-6th:  Fall Retreat  - Here is the skinny on the Carmel YOUTH's 2011 Fall Retreat

This year, the fall retreat will be held at Cedar Grove Retreat in Kannapolis, N.C.  We will be holding a combined retreat with Sharon UMC and Quail Hollow Presbyterian.  It will be for both Middle and High School youth, and will have special opportunities for both age groups (we will worship together, but divide up for discussions and games some).  It will be the weekend of Nov 4th-6th.  We will leave the church Friday evening (between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.) and eat on the way.  Our return will be Sunday by about lunch  (12:00 p.m.) time so your families can take you home after worship Sunday morning.

The cost will be $75.00 per person. We may have the opportunity to do some additional activities (ropes course or paintball), but those will be an additional charge for any who want to participate.  If the cost is a problem (I know some of you have multiple youth) let me know, and I'll see what I can work out. I will get you a packing list as soon as I can. For those planning to attend, I need a $20.00 deposit by Oct 19, 2011.  I will get you any further information as it comes available (I am still working with the other churches on details).

Senior High Summer Mission Trip Information  March 22, 2011

Trip Dates: June 19-24
Trip Destination: Osage Indian Reservation, Pawhuska, OK
Trip Cost: $500 or less.

The trip this year is with YouthWorks, a summer mission organization that has been around for many years. I have attached a copy of the email from the site leader detailing what the facilities and ministry will be like while we are in Oklahoma.

Right now, it appears we will be flying Southwest Airlines out of Greenville/Spartanburg to Tulsa (this is the most cost-effective option). We will fly out on June 19 and arrive back on June 24. I would prefer if several parents could help us by car pooling us to and from the airport. That will save us the cost of parking the bus and leave it here for use by the church. Once the tickets are finalized, I will provide more detailed information.

We have several fund raising events coming up. Due to increased fuel cost and changes in the budget between my planning and now, we will use our fund raising to first offset the cost of the trips to lower the cost to the level of the initial published cost ($500 per person). If we raise more, we will lower the cost even more, but I will not know those figures until after the fund raisers. For those who are going, I expect that they participate in at least 2 of the fund raising events. I have included a list of the events we have scheduled so that they can plan.

I have also included a payment schedule to help with spreading the payments out (see above).

I am very excited about the trip, and look forward to going with your youth to minister in this community. Thanks again for all that you do, and for allowing me to work with you as we strive to nurture the next generation of Christian leaders.

Youth - Past Events

The High School Youth Report  - Neon Kentucky 2010  (Mission Work)

For the past 4 months I have thought, "I'll get one of the youth to write the newsletter article." Yet again, I have forgotten to ask someone to do it, so you’re stuck with me.

Our Senior High youth just returned from a mission trip to Neon, Kentucky, where they were bringing down the house - "literally". We spent four grueling days working in the heat to tear down an old home for salvage. We were working with Homes, Inc., who helps families in rural Kentucky with safe, affordable housing. Just the work we did combined with the contributions we made to the ministry (not including the salvage) raised over $10,000 which Homes can use to help those in need. The youth were an excellent testimony first and fore-most to Christ with their attitudes and the way they worked, but also to Carmel Presbyterian; you should be extremely proud.

The youth also prayed nightly for one of our own who has been fighting at times for his very life. Robin Yopp is still in the hospital and is recovering from complications from the surgery he had to help deal with his intestinal problems. Please continue to pray for Robin and his family as he heals, and that he heals as he needs to so that the next steps in the process can proceed. I saw Robin yesterday, and that young man continues to have a strength and faith that would put many life-long Christians to shame. We can praise God not only for his protection of Robin through some very difficult and dangerous circumstances, but also for the testimony that Robin and the Yopp family have been through all of this. Please continue to hold them up in prayer.

In Him,  Dan Moore (Youth Director)

Acts 8:26 - 31
Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked. "How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
