The Carmel Amani Beaders will continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the Cathcart Center to work with the beads provided by the Amani Children‘s Foundation. Lots of creative thought goes into the making of the jewelry as well as lots of conversation and wonderful fellowship! If you are looking or fellowship, laughter, fun and something worthwhile to devote your time to, come join this group! Be watching the Sunday bulletin, E-Blasts and the website, www.carmelpresbyterian.org, for news and special events about the Amani Bead Mission –Supporting Orphans in Africa! Thank you! We hope you wear your jewelry with pride and know that you have helped 19 children live a better life because with every $1,000 we keep a child in the orphanage for one year!

The Wednesdays for April will be the 13th and the 27th. Priscilla Perkins or Debbie Ferrell can answer any questions you may have. We are going to change our monthly times of meeting and hope that the new days chosen will allow more of you to join us, make jewelry, and help support orphans in Kenya. Absolutely no experience is necessary! Please call / EMAIL Debbie Ferrell or call / EMAIL Priscilla Perkins if you have questions.

The Amani Beaders group would like to thank everyone who purchased Amani jewelry! Since we started working with the Amani Children‘s Foundation in 2008, Carmel Presbyterian Church has been able to donate a total of $19,000 to this wonderful organization. This includes $5,000 that was raised this year! In 2010, we were able to sell, not only to church members on special holidays like Mother‘s Day and Christmas, but we also sold the jewelry at:

  • A nurse‘s convention in May
  • Ann Belk‘s Book Club
  • Barnful of Quilts‘at the Fox Family Farm in Waxhaw, NC.
  • Carmel‘s Weekday School

In addition to the Amani jewelry, we have added beautiful scarves to our inventory! The Amani Children‘s Foundation is a non-profit organization that works exclusively in Kenya, Africa with the approximately 2 million orphaned children there. Since 1994, they have supported the six orphanages managed by New Life Homes. It is because of the dedication of the ladies who make the jewelry, and the members who are so excited to see and buy what we have made, that we have exceeded our own xpectations!

Just think, our original goal was to sell enough of the Amani jewelry to send $1,000 by the end of 2008! We have exceeded that goal and more each year due to the dedication of the beaders and the buyers!

The Amani beads are made in Kenya and are purchased at a local free trade business. There is an African company that purchases the beads from the women and sends the beads over to Europe to make fine necklaces. The seconds are shipped back to Africa. Several times a year, the Amani Children‘s Foundation sends volunteers to visit and work at the orphanages. When they return to the United States they bring back the seconds that have been collected since the last trip. These seconds are given to churches and other nonprofit organizations to make jewelry. The jewelry is then sold and 100% of the profits are returned to the Amani Children‘s Foundation to be forwarded to the orphanages. That means that 100% of what you pur-chase goes back to help orphans. Each piece of jewelry comes with a card that tells the story.

The group will continue to meet 2-3 times a month in 2010 and welcome new women, whether they know how to make jewelry or not! For 2010, we‘ll be meeting in the Cathcart Cen-ter. Look for specific dates and times in the Sunday bulletin and on the web-site, www.carmelpresbyterian.org, news and special events, Amani Bead Mission – Supporting Orphans in Africa!  Thank you! We hope you wear your jewelry with pride and know that you have helped 14 children live a better life because with every $1,000 we keep a child in the orphanage for one year!

Please join us for a fun time making jewelry. No experience is necessary!! Or  maybe you would just like to come and watch what we do and enjoy the fellowship.

It is hard for us to imagine the number of orphans in Africa, an estimated 13 million. The Amani Children’s Foundation works exclusively in Kenya where there is an estimated 2 million orphans but has a stable government to work with. Aids and violence are the main causes of the loss of parents. By partnering with the Amani Children’s Foundation, we are working with an established ministry that already ministers to orphans. They support six orphanages managed by New Life Homes since 1994.
