 Jack W. Williams - (08/12/21-01/13/11)

Mr. Williams, 89, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2011 following a brief illness. Mr. Williams was born August 12, 1921 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Ollie Glenn and Carrie Juanita Bosher Williams.

Following his graduation from Bessemer High School in Greensboro, North Carolina and his service during World War II, he began his funeral service career as a co-owner of Gaston Memorial Park with his brother Glenn Williams. On June 4, 1950, he married the love of his life, Joyce Whitfield Williams in the Whitfield Fellowship Hall at Adams Memorial Presbyterian Church in Gastonia.

During the '50s and '60s he developed and owned cemeteries in Gainesville, Florida, having begun Alachua Memorial Park and Westview Memorial Park. In 1965, he purchased Forest Lawn West in Charlotte and relocated his family and business interests to this area. Mr. Williams was known for his innovative, progressive leadership in the bereavement industry. His belief in the total concept of preneed planning led him to become the first cemetery owner in North Carolina to offer preneed vaults and memorials to the families of this community. In 1970, seeing the need for a perpetual care cemetery in the growing region of Southeast Charlotte, Jack Williams purchased the original tract of land in Union County that was the beginning of Forest Lawn East Cemetery in  Matthews / Weddington, the area's premier independently owned cemetery. In the early '80s, believing that total care at the time of bereavement was best for the families he served, he purchased Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service and McEwen Funeral Service in Monroe. In 1987, he built Williams-Dearborn Funeral Home (now Heritage at Weddington) across the street from Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Weddington so that families could make their funeral and burial arrangements in one central location. Always the entrepreneur, Jack also owned and operated Southeast Air Control, a company which provided after-market air conditioning to the foreign automobile industry.

Mr. Williams was proud to have served his country during World War II in the Army Air Force with the China-Burma-India Theatre as a member of the 12th Bomber group in the 83rd Bomber Squad. He served as President of the Florida Cemetery Association and as a two-term President of the North Carolina Cemetery Association. While in Florida, he served as keeper of the four roses with the East Side Garden Club in Gainesville, Florida. He was a member of the Lions Club, a Mason of R.T. Schafer Lodge No. 350 F & AM, a member of the Quiet Birdmen Number 20, 692 and a lifetime Member Emeritus in Bassmasters of Charlotte. An avid golfer, Mr. Williams was a member of Carmel Country Club. He was honored to serve as an Elder at Carmel Presbyterian Church where he attended for over 45 years.

The family wishes to invite friends to the home of Dr. Laramie Williams and her husband Robert Baker on Saturday evening from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a gathering in remembrance for Jack.

Visitation for Mr. Williams will be Sunday from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home - Weddington Chapel, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews with the celebration of life service beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be immediately following at Forest Lawn East in the Williams private estate. The service will be conducted by Rev. Bill Katibah and music offered by Rick Bean.

Jack was a Veteran, an entrepreneur, visionary, innovator, leader, explorer and sportsman. He continued to dress in his suit and go to work at Forest Lawn East Cemetery until the last 10 days of his life. His home and family were the reasons he lived and the source of happiness and love. He was a gentleman and a gentle man.

In addition to his wife, Joyce, Mr. Williams is survived by his daughters Carolyn McCall Williams, Laramie Ann Williams and her husband Bob Baker; grandsons Austin Williams Baker, Dalton Whitfield Baker; granddaughter Savannah McCall Baker; sister Emily Marie Johnson, brother Ollie Glenn Williams, Jr. and his wife Marge.  Zach Ramsey  (June 25, 1987 - March 30, 2005)

'Peace I leave with you;my peace I give you.'  John 14:27

Zachary, born June 25, 1987 in Raleigh NC, passed away peacefully March 31, 2005 at home, surrounded and comforted by his family, and is now in the arms of his Lord and Saviour, our God Almighty. Zach exemplified courage, strength, and a transcendent faith during his two and one half year battle with cancer. He faced each day with tremendous grace and enthusiasm and always found something to be thankful for each day. Zach always seemed to give others more than he received, and throughout his illness he continued to find ways to reach out to others. This desire to help others led him to create the Zach Ramsey Children's Cancer Fund, whose mission is to help financially needy families whose children are receiving treatment at the Presbyterian Blume Children's Cancer Clinic. There was nothing more important to Zach than his family and friends and the time he spent with each of them. As his days became more precious to him, he loved nothing more than to sit around and talk about the day and the things that everyone had done. Zach was loved and cherished not only by his family, but by many, many others, and his passing will be a loss for everyone. His spirit and soul were so strong, and he will always be with everyone he knew and touched. He is survived by his parents Mary Louise and Jim Ramsey, his brother Alex, and his sister Pauline, all of Charlotte; his grandparents Harry and Pauline Kraly of Wilmington NC, and Harold and Jo Ramsey of Charlotte NC, his aunt and uncle Harry and Lynn Kraly of Wilmington NC, his aunt Mary Norris of Gastonia, his uncle Bo Ramsey of Raeford NC and his cousins Drew Kraly of Wilmington NC and Mac Norris of Charlotte NC.

Zach was a young man with a wise soul who had an incredible zest for what life had to offer him. Early on he understood how precious life was and tried his best to live it 'well.' He had many close friends and Zach viewed friendship as something to always be valued and not to be taken for granted. If you were his friend, you experienced a deep, loyal, and intimate relationship. Zach was so concerned about the welfare of his friends and family after he was gone, and he took great comfort knowing that he had a positive impact on peoples lives and that his suffering was not in vain. Nothing made him happier than when someone shared with him that he was an example to them of how to meet and overcome adversity. Zach had a wonderful gift for relating to everyone he met - young children, contemporaries, and adults alike - and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with others and learning about them. Zach loved so many things in his life - surfing at Wrightsville Beach, music of all types, playing poker, shooting pool at home,, managing his stocks over the internet, working at Chick Fil A, detailing his Jeep, and just spending time with his friends. Zach approached everything he did with a plan which everyone wanted to participate in because you knew you were going to have fun and do interesting things with Zach. Especially dear to him were the Carolina Panthers, home games on Sunday afternoons, and the time he was able to spend at those games with his special friends in section 310.

On behalf of Zach and our family we would like to thank our Carmel Presbyterian Church family for all of the love they shared with him, his friends Andrew, Trey, Mark, Walt, Adam, and Matt who were with him during many tough times the past two years, Andre, Peter, and the Cotswold Chick Fil A staff, Dr. Mark Mogul, Jodie, Karen, Barbara, Angela, Janice and all the staff at Presbyterian Blume Children's Cancer Clinic, Amy and Biffa at the Make A Wish Foundation, the staff at Hemby Children's Hospital, his Carolina Panthers family, Riley, Ashley, and friends in section 310, Keith at WBT, The Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, Kids Path, his Myers Park High School family, and the countless friends and neighbors who prayed, sustained, and supported him and our family the past two years. For Zach, life was about living well without regrets. His prayer was that everyone could experience the same peace he had through Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers, please direct all gifts and contributions to the Zach Ramsey Children's Cancer Fund in care of Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, POB 33549, Charlotte NC or to Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Rd., Charlotte NC 28226. Visitation will be Friday, April 1 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Carmel Presbyterian Church with a Memorial Service Saturday April 2 at 11 am
