Usher Responsibilities 2012
Thank you for your willingness to volunteer as an usher. Ushering is fun and rewarding to us as members of Carmel, and is also an important service to our congregation along with being a “first-impression” opportunity to our visitors. These guidelines and responsibilities will enhance the way worshippers feel welcomed into the sanctuary & "Carmel Family".
Responsibilities of Every Team Member
-
Please be in the Sanctuary, with an usher badge on and ready to assume responsibilities by 10:10 A.M. It may be necessary to excuse yourself from Sunday School early.
-
The main job of the ushers is offering gracious hospitality to all who come through the doors – visitors and members alike!
-
It is important that the ushers not contribute to a bottleneck at the main doors. Ushers should spread themselves across the church making sure that all are welcomed to worship.
-
Remember that there is only one “first impression”! Visitors decide to return to a church within the first ten minutes of encountering members of the congregation. You are in a critical outreach ministry!
-
Make sure that warmth and hospitality are genuine. Insincerity can be felt immediately!
-
Shake hands firmly and look people in the eye.
-
Please be careful that your conversations with friends in the congregation or on your usher team does not appear as exclusive or make folks entering the sanctuary feel as though they are interrupting you to get assistance.
-
It may be necessary for an usher to escort a visitor to a particular building site. The usher should notify the Captain of this need.
-
When you are not going to be able to perform your duty as usher, please notify your team captain so that they are not left short handed. If necessary, please try to find a substitute.
Usher Captain (1)
-
Make sure that the necessary number of ushers are present, wearing their usher badges, and graciously fulfilling their appropriate responsibilities.
-
If a member of the team does not show, it will be the responsibility of the Captain to find a substitute.
-
Ensure that each member their team is capable of giving all necessary building instructions (i.e. restrooms, nursery, classrooms, etc.)
-
Wear and test the pager for the nursery (go to the nursery and have them page you- the pager is reset by turning off and then back on.) The pager is kept in the drawer in the Sacristy. PLEASE remember to return it to the drawer at the end of the service.
Outside Greeter (1)
-
The main task of the Outside Greeter is to monitor the parking lot to see if there is anyone who needs assistance.
-
If it is raining, be prepared to walk people from their cars with umbrellas.
-
Welcome everyone you see.
Before Church Service Begins:
One usher is posted outside the main doors to welcome people and to open the door, if necessary. Please trade off if it is extremely cold or hot outside. At 10:30 A.M., this usher is to instruct the greeters to go into the sanctuary. Meanwhile, the other ushers should pass out bulletins, assist with seating and greeting visitors. All ushers need to assist during this time unless otherwise instructed by the Captain. Offer a Visitor Brochure to first time guests (as identified by either the Greeters, usher or one of the Pastors).
Carmel offers two nursery rooms during Worship: The Infant Nursery (birth through crawlers) and the Toddler Nursery (confident walkers through 2 ½ years).
After Service Begins:
The outside usher closes all the doors. One usher remains in the narthex until 10:35A.M. One male usher is to watch the front of the Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary during the service. This is in order to see late visitors and also to provide an extra measure of security since the main doors to the Fellowship Hall are not locked during the service. PLEASE DO NOT “HANG OUT” BEHIND THE CHOIR THROUGHOUT THE SERVICE! All the other ushers should be seated and then return to the back of the sanctuary to collect the offering. Your captain will tell you when to return. This is usually during the hymn before the offering. The usher in the narthex is to keep “latecomers” in the narthex until an appropriate time for seating, at which time the usher in the back of the sanctuary will usher them to a pew. Refer to your bulletin for appropriate times for seating. Please try not to allow latecomers to come into the sanctuary and stand at the back until they are seated. It can be very distracting for people, especially if there is a prayer at the time. There are always exceptions, so just exercise good judgment in these instances.
Counting the Congregation:
Every person in the sanctuary should be counted as part of the worshipping congregation. This includes each person – regardless of age and regardless of actual time spent in the sanctuary (i.e. children who are dismissed to Worship Readiness). It also includes all choir members, ushers, leaders of worship (including the pastors) and those working the audio and visual systems. Please do not count until after the Praise Music has been completed. Dismissed children and Worship Readiness leaders should be counted as they go out the doors.
Offering:
We need 6 ushers to collect the offering. Your team captain will be in charge of designating the 6 at each service, and answering any questions that may arise.
5 Cents A Meal Offering
The first Sunday of each month includes receiving the 5 cents a meal offering. Two of the ushers pick up these baskets at the time they go down the aisle for the collection. This first Sunday is also Communion Sunday so the ushers DO NOT present the offering and the Doxology is not played so that is why the baskets need to be picked up as the offering is being collected.
Special Services:
The usher teams for months having special services (Christmas, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and any others that are instituted) are responsible for these services. Certainly if any help is needed from other teams, please ask.
After Service Clean – Up:
After the service all ushers are expected to replace Bibles and hymnals, clean up trash, and collect the fellowship registers. Please take these registers to the church office and leave them outside the office door. Also, after Communion, the little cups in the pews need to be collected and disposed of. This takes only a small amount of time if each usher participates and it is very important to leave our sanctuary in good shape.
General Information:
Some of the items located in the sacristy are: Wheelchair, extra hymnals, some first aid items, trashcan, and schedule of ushers and their duties. If there is a medical emergency, please employ the medical emergency guidelines attached to this document.
Thank you again for you valuable service to the church.
The Worship Committee
Medical Emergency Procedures
In the event of an incident, discreet movement and measured responses are necessary. In the event of an incident, the HEAD USHER immediately brings the closest available "FIRST RESPONDER" to the individual involved.
1. Dr. Chuck Bregier – typically towards the back of the sanctuary on the Praise Team side
2. Connie Tricebook - Choir
3. Dawn Norman – typically along back row on piano side
If DR. BREGIER is in worship, at the direction of the FIRST RESPONDER, the HEAD USHER will immediately bring DR. BREGIER to the stricken member
After the necessary immediate personnel (FIRST RESPONDER, DR. BREGIER) is brought to stricken member, the HEAD USHER immediately brings the Pastor currently not involved in leading worship to the site.
A FIRST JUDGMENT needs to be made as quickly as possible: Is this a "Non–Emergency" or "Emergency" situation, if you are unsure call 911 (always better to be safe than sorry).
1. Member can be quickly stabilized.
2. The member can be transported safely and quickly out of the Sanctuary.
3. Worship can continue, but needs a singing break.
4. How is stricken member best moved from Sanctuary?

4. An Usher should be directed to call "911" Address: 2048 Carmel Road Charlotte, N.C. - Remain On Line until professional help arrives (providing as much information on the type of injury \ situation)
5. The Sanctuary will be emptied by the Pastor currently leading worship.
6. The pews immediately by the stricken member will be emptied first.
7. Ushers will take blankets from the sacristy to provide a screen from evacuating worshippers.
8. An usher will be posted outside to direct incoming emergency personnel.

At no time should congregational members, unless trained medical personnel, be involved in the treatment of the stricken member.
An AED will be purchased and installed by the organ well
The wheelchair, basic first aid kit and blankets will be kept in the Sacristy.
Fire and Smoke Emergencies
If you detect smoke and/or fire:
• Initiate evacuation procedures for any occupants of the affected building(s)
• Call #911 (move to a safe area before making this call).
• Give your name, telephone number (in case you get disconnected), and location - Address: 2048 Carmel Road Charlotte, N.C.
• Describe the situation.
• If you know how to use a fire extinguisher and feel the best course of action is to attempt to extinguish the fire, locate an extinguisher and, without risking injury attempt to extinguish the fire.
• If the fire is beyond the point of a safe attempt to extinguish it, isolate the fire by closing doors in the area before evacuating.
